Day 08 Transfer to Nuwaraliya

Today, we embark on a scenic journey of approximately 80 km (around 3 hours’ drive), winding through hills blanketed with lush green tea plantations. Along the way, we’ll stop at picturesque waterfalls, adding a touch of romance to this mountainous route. We’ll arrive in Nuwara Eliya – the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea industry and a city full of colonial charm. This town was founded in 1846 by Samuel Baker, the explorer of Lake Albert and the Upper Nile. Thanks to its cool climate, Nuwara Eliya became a perfect sanctuary for British civil servants and tea planters during colonial times.

Often referred to as “Little England”, Nuwara Eliya was where the British indulged in their favorite pastimes such as fox hunting, deer and elephant hunting, polo, golf, and cricket. The region is also known for producing one of the finest varieties of Ceylon tea, grown in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands. In and around the town, you’ll find a number of attractions: a well-maintained golf course, trout-filled streams, the charming Victoria Park, and Gregory Lake, ideal for boating or fishing.

We will also visit the famous Hakgala Botanical Gardens, an oasis of greenery featuring roses, tree ferns, playful monkeys, and endemic blue magpies. Rise early for a journey into the wild beauty of Horton Plains National Park, a protected plateau perched at an elevation of 2,100 meters in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. En route, enjoy a packed or takeaway breakfast as the morning mist lifts over the rolling hills. Often shrouded in cool, windy fog, Horton Plains is a haven for nature lovers and birdwatchers. It is an Important Bird Area with numerous species endemic to Sri Lanka—some of which are found only in this specific ecosystem. The park’s unique combination of montane cloud forests, grasslands, marshes, and streams creates an environment teeming with biodiversity.

Your hike through this stunning landscape will take you to World’s End—a dramatic escarpment with a sheer 900-meter drop that offers breathtaking views when the skies are clear. Day 10 Kithulgala

Kithulgala is nestled beside the Kelani River, one of Sri Lanka’s longest rivers, and is surrounded by a lush secondary rainforest. A tributary wind through this forest, joining the main river and creating a rich natural habitat. Despite being mostly secondary growth, the forest boasts an impressive biodiversity, closely resembling that of a primary rainforest.

You may encounter fascinating wildlife such as wild boar, toque macaques, purple-faced leaf monkeys, and barking deer. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the presence of species like the red-faced malkoha, Ceylon blue magpie, oriental dwarf kingfisher, frogmouth, and Layard’s parakeet.

Day 11 Transfer from Kitulgala to Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe Wildlife Safari & Optional Camping Today, you’ll transfer from Kitulgala to Udawalawe National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s premier wildlife sanctuaries, renowned for its rich biodiversity and as a vital habitat for Sri Lankan elephants and water birds. Udawalawe National Park was officially declared a protected area on June 30th, 1972. It stretches over a vast landscape of dry plains, rocky outcrops, and grasslands, making it an ideal sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna. The park is especially famous for its large elephant population, often seen roaming freely.

Upon arrival, you will visit the Elephant Transit Home, established in 1995 to care for orphaned, injured, or sick baby elephants rescued from across Sri Lanka. Here, you can observe these young elephants being fed milk four times a day and learn about the ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and eventually release them back into the wild. The home currently houses around 20 to 30 juvenile elephants, receiving expert care until they are strong enough for reintroduction to their natural habitat.

The Elephant Transit Home plays a crucial role in the conservation of the endangered Sri Lankan elephant, a species facing threats from human-wildlife conflicts that often leave many calves orphaned. Since its inception, over sixty calves have been successfully rehabilitated and released back into Udawalawe’ s wilderness. At around noon, watch the heartwarming spectacle of baby elephants being fed milk at the Transit Home.

Day 12 Udawalawa to Yala National park

Early morning transfers to Tissamaharama through the jungle area, crossing via Yala National Park. Yala National Park is renowned for having the highest leopard density in the world — these majestic predators are the undisputed Lords of the Jungle! Alongside the leopards, elephants roam freely, and cautious deer scamper nearby, creating an extraordinary wildlife experience.

Yala is a vast expanse of forest, grasslands, and lagoons bordering the Indian Ocean in southeast Sri Lanka. It is home to diverse wildlife including leopards, elephants, crocodiles, and over 130 species of birds. You may spot colorful painted storks perched along lagoon shores where crocodiles bask in the sun. Peacocks flaunt their vibrant blues and greens among the trees, while monkeys chatter and leap through the canopy. In the thorny scrub jungle, the elusive leopard reigns as the park’s star attraction.

A total of 32 mammal species have been recorded in Yala, including threatened species such as:

Water birds including lesser flamingo, pelican, spoonbill, painted stork, black-necked stork, grey heron, purple heron, night heron, and darter frequent the lagoons. Day 13 Yala National Park To Bundala National Park

Bundala National Park is a globally significant wetland and an internationally recognized wintering ground for migratory water birds in Sri Lanka. The park is home to an astonishing 197 species of birds, including the spectacular Greater Flamingo, which arrives in large flocks during migration season. Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1969 and upgraded to a national park in 1993, Bundala was Sri Lanka’s first wetland to be designated a Ramsar site in 1991. Later, in 2005, UNESCO recognized Bundala as a biosphere reserve, highlighting its ecological importance.

The park covers diverse habitats, including lagoons, salt marshes, mangroves, and dry thorn scrub, supporting an impressive range of wildlife:

324 species of vertebrates — including 32 fish species, 15 amphibians, 48 reptiles, 197 birds, and 32 mammals.
