Start your day early with a 5:00 AM departure from Anuradhapura as you head towards Wilpattu National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s largest and most pristine wildlife reserves. Nestled along the northwest coast of the island, Wilpattu is renowned for its unique landscape marked by “Willus”—natural, sand-rimmed water basins that fill with rainwater, creating vital habitats for wildlife. Declared a national park in 1938, Wilpattu is rich in both biodiversity and historical significance. The park’s lush dry-zone forests are dotted with over 60 lakes and tanks, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.
On your safari, keep your eyes open for the park’s most iconic residents, including the Sri Lankan Leopard, Elephant, Sloth Bear, Spotted Deer, Water Buffalo, and Sambar Deer. Wilpattu is also a haven for bird enthusiasts, home to a wide variety of wetland and forest birds such as the Painted Stork, Garganey, Spoonbill, Jungle fowl, Kites, and Owls. Negombo is also home to a culturally diverse population, with a significant Roman Catholic community and strong Sinhala and Tamil influences.
