Day 05: Udawalawe – Wildlife Safari & Elephant Conservation

Rise early and set off for an adventurous morning at Udawalawe National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated wildlife sanctuaries. Established on 30th June 1972, the park spans over 30,000 hectares and serves as a vital habitat for Sri Lankan elephants, water birds, and a diverse range of flora and fauna. Its unique ecosystem of grasslands, scrub jungles, and reservoirs makes it an ideal location for wildlife observation.

Begin your day with an early morning jeep safari, the best time to witness elephants in their natural environment, along with sightings of crocodiles, water buffaloes, spotted deer, sambar, jackals, and a variety of birdlife including peacocks, eagles, and herons.

After the safari, continue your exploration of conservation efforts at the Elephant Transit Home (ETH). Established in 1995 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation with support from the Born Free Foundation, this facility is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of orphaned and injured baby elephants. Unlike other elephant sanctuaries, ETH maintains a hands-off policy to ensure these young elephants retain their natural behaviors before being released into the wild.

Visitors can observe the elephants during their scheduled feeding times (four times daily), providing a rare glimpse into their care and development. The calves, once strong and healthy, are reintroduced into the wild within the park, where they are closely monitored to ensure successful reintegration.

Day 07: Tissamaharama – Into the Wilds of Yala

Yala spans over 979 square kilometers of protected terrain comprising dry monsoon forests, grasslands, marshes, and lagoons along the Indian Ocean. Its rich biodiversity includes 32 species of mammals, such as the Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya), elephant, sloth bear, sambar deer, spotted deer, wild boar, and water buffalo. With one of the highest leopard densities on Earth, Yala is famed for offering rare close-up sightings of these elusive big cats.
