Kandy, also known as Senkadagalapura, is a sacred Buddhist city and was the last royal capital of the Sinhala kings. It played a crucial role in preserving Sinhala culture and Buddhism for over 2,500 years, until British colonization in 1815. Nestled on a plateau surrounded by misty mountains, tea plantations, and biodiverse rainforests, Kandy offers a serene and spiritual atmosphere.
At the heart of Kandy lies the picturesque Kandy Lake (Bogambara Lake), perfect for leisurely strolls. The city is renowned for its most sacred Buddhist shrine, the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa)—home to the revered tooth relic of the Buddha. This temple is a focal point for pilgrims and locals alike, and its grandeur is celebrated annually with the famous Esala Perahera procession. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, it remains one of the most significant religious sites in the Buddhist world.
The Temple of the Tooth Relic is situated within the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy. The relic is believed to confer governance and protection to whoever possesses it, making it a symbol of power and reverence throughout Sri Lanka’s history.
